This artifact includes a critique of a research paper from EDUC-601 Educational Research Design and Methodology. The article that surrounds this artifact reviews mixed methods and their rigour towards inclusive education. It acknowledges that when used thoughtfully, mixed methods can support the researcher in addressing challenges in inclusive education, but that this method does not fit all types of research. I have highlighted both the strengths and limitations of this type of research below:
Strengths identified are:
- It provides a multidimensional understanding of inclusive education. The review draws upon diverse participant groups, meaning it can contribute to a multiple perspectives that can inform the research.
- Enhances the depth of the research by using figures, tables, selection criteria, screening processes and data extraction methods that deepens the analysis of the existing study, rather than just summarizing it.
Limitations identified are:
- Runs the risk of insufficient rigor as the reporting quality and methodological integration was often weak.
- Researchers may lack advance training in both qualitative and quantitative approaches
- Potential for inconsistent reporting as research has to constantly adjust their criteria when a new perspective arose.
This critique strengthened my understanding of how different research methods shape the quality and impact of educational studies. While mixed methods research can meaningfully inform both policy and practice, it is important to examine the strengths and limitations of this type of research. This has helped me recognize that not every approach fits every inquiry. This artifact reflects my growing ability to evaluation different methodologies and select the research method that alights with my study.
